6x8 and 6x8.5 Paper Pads Explained: Sizes and Uses
A 6x8 paper pad holds sheets that measure 6 x 8 inches (about 15.2 x 20.3 cm), a third of the area of a standard 12 x 12 scrapbook sheet. The smaller sheets suit journals, cards, photo mats, tags and pocket pages. Three sheets can also cover a full 12 x 12 layout.
Small paper pads are easy to love and easy to underuse. They sit on a shelf because it isn't obvious what a 6 x 8 sheet is for, or how it fits with bigger pages. This guide covers the size, how it compares, and a few calm, practical ways to use every sheet.
What size is a 6x8 paper pad?
Each sheet is 6 inches wide and 8 inches tall (or 8 x 6 if you turn it). In metric, that's about 15.2 x 20.3 cm. It's a rectangle, not a square, which is the main thing that sets it apart from the more familiar 6x6, 8x8 and 12x12 pads.
What is 6x8 paper called?
There isn't a special trade name. Pads in this size are usually sold simply as "6x8 paper pads" or "6 x 8 in" patterned paper, which is how Crafii lists them. You may also see the size written as "8x6" or "6 x 8 in". It's the same sheet, turned.
How does 6x8 compare with other scrapbook paper sizes?
| Sheet size | Metric (approx.) | Shape | Common uses |
|---|---|---|---|
| 6 x 6 in | 15.2 x 15.2 cm | Square | Cards, small accents, mini albums |
| 6 x 8 in | 15.2 x 20.3 cm | Rectangle | Journals, cards, photo mats, pocket pages, tags |
| 8 x 8 in | 20.3 x 20.3 cm | Square | 8x8 albums, larger card panels |
| 12 x 12 in | 30.5 x 30.5 cm | Square | Full scrapbook layouts, large backgrounds |
What this means in practice
- 6x8 vs 12x12: a 12 x 12 sheet has three times the area of a 6 x 8 sheet. A 6 x 8 sheet is easier to store and cut down, and quicker to use in a journal. A 12 x 12 sheet gives you one uninterrupted background for a full layout.
- 6x8 vs 6x6: the same width, but 2 inches taller. That extra height leaves room around a 4 x 6 photo, a title strip or a pocket.
- Pattern scale: on smaller pads, prints are usually scaled to the sheet, which tends to suit small projects and strips. Check each pad's gallery for its actual designs.
What fits on a 6x8 sheet?
A few quick measurements make planning easier:
- A 4 x 6 in photo leaves a 1 in border on every side, so the sheet works as a ready-made photo mat.
- A standard A2 card front (4.25 x 5.5 in) fits on one sheet, with an offcut left for strips or tags.
- Strips: one sheet cut lengthwise gives six 1 x 8 in strips for borders and banners.
- Squares: one sheet gives twelve 2 x 2 in squares for a grid or patchwork background.
What does "double-sided" and "200 GSM" mean?
- Double-sided means each sheet is printed on both sides. On Crafii pads, that's how 36 sheets carry 18 designs. Plan cuts with both sides in mind, since the back can be the coordinating paper for your next layer.
- GSM stands for grams per square meter, a standard measure of paper weight. Crafii's live pads are listed at 200 GSM. We give it as a spec so you can compare papers. We don't make claims about how it performs with particular pens, inks or adhesives, so test on a scrap first.
How do you use 6x8 paper on a 12x12 layout?
This is one of the most common questions about small pads. Here's a method that covers a full 12 x 12 base exactly, with nothing wasted:
- Start with a 12 x 12 base (a sheet of plain paper).
- Place two 6 x 8 sheets side by side, vertically, along the top. Together they cover 12 x 8 in.
- Cut a third sheet in half to make two 6 x 4 in pieces. Lay them side by side along the bottom to cover the remaining 12 x 4 in.
- Hide the seams. Place your photos, a title strip or a band of washi tape across the joins.
- Layer accents cut from a fourth sheet: a photo mat, a banner or a few squares.
Prefer a softer look? Leave a plain border showing and float one 6 x 8 sheet in the center as a single panel behind your photos.

What can you make with a 6x8 paper pad?
- Journal backgrounds and pockets: glue a sheet in as a page background, or fold and glue one into a simple pocket for tags and notes.
- Photo mats: frame a 4 x 6 photo with a 1 in border.
- Card fronts: cut an A2 panel, then use the offcut as a belly band or strip.
- Tags and bookmarks: trace a tag shape or cut a long strip for a bookmark.
- Envelope liners: trace the inside of an envelope flap and trim to fit.
- Junk journal clusters: use one sheet as the base layer under ephemera and diecuts. See How to Build a Junk Journal Cluster.

Should you choose 6x8 or 12x12?
- Mostly journaling, cards or tags? Start with 6 x 8. The sheets fit journal pages and card panels with little trimming.
- Mostly full 12 x 12 scrapbook layouts? Choose 12 x 12 for single, seamless backgrounds.
- A bit of both? A 6 x 8 pad covers a 12 x 12 base with the three-sheet method above, so one small pad can stretch across both.
- Short on space? Smaller pads are easier to store flat and carry to a desk or class.
How should you store 6x8 paper pads?
Keep pads flat, out of direct sun and away from damp, in a drawer, file box or shelf divider. Store loose offcuts in an envelope inside the pad's cover so the coordinating pieces stay together. Then the next card or journal page starts with paper that already matches.
